Contrary to popular belief, smaller college football programs can still provide a high level of play and entertainment. The South Carolina State Bulldogs are one of the best examples. A Championship Program

Since 1907, the Bulldogs have won more than 60% of their games, which is a tremendous accomplishment for any program, even at the FCS level. Since the 1970s, South Carolina State has won over two dozen conference championships, including several during the 2010s and 2020s, making the Bulldogs one of the preeminent programs in the MEAC. At the same time, the Bulldogs have also won a handful of Black College national championships. The first of those came in 1976 under legendary coach Willie Jeffries. But the success of South Carolina State football has been long-lasting, with the Bulldogs also winning a Black College national title in 2021, further proving that South Carolina State has been built for lasting success.

Pathway to the Pros

Compared to most FCS programs, South Carolina State has proven to be a pathway to the NFL and beyond. The Bulldogs have had four former players eventually earn a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, including the legendary Deacon Jones, who helped to coin the term “sack.” Even in more recent years, players like Pro Bowler Javon Hargrave and 2018 Defensive Rookie of the Year Shaquille Leonard have gone from South Carolina State to the NFL, showing that the Bulldogs are a small college football program with tons of star power.
