Someone once said that Maryland does two things well: crab cakes and football. One of those football teams happens to be the Morgan State Bears. As an FCS program, it’s far easier to find cheap Morgan State football tickets than it is for the other pro or college football teams in the state of Maryland. But that doesn’t mean the Bears should be forgotten or overlooked. They are a proud football program that has worked its way up from the lower levels, finding plenty of success along the way. They are now a competitive member of the Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference, which has helped to increase the demand for last-minute Morgan State football tickets.

The Early Days

Morgan State football officially started in 1898 and experienced its first period of sustained success under Edward P. Hunt, who coached the Bears from 1929 to 1959. During those three decades, Hunt led the Bears to 14 conference titles and five national titles at the Division II level. Hunt passed the torch in 1960 to Earl Banks, who continued Morgan State’s success. At one point, Banks coached the Bears to three consecutive undefeated seasons, culminating in a 1967 national championship, not to mention six conference titles during his tenure, including one in 1971, which was Morgan State’s first season in the MEAC.

MEAC Mayhem

Unfortunately, the good days for Morgan State wouldn’t last forever. The Bears eventually faded after joining the MEAC and having to compete in a conference full of other proud HBCU programs. However, Morgan State would win three conference championships during the 1970s, with the Bears coming around again in the 2010s. In 2014, Morgan State won a share of the MEAC title and reached the FCS Playoffs for the first time, proving that the Bears are a program that’s capable of finding success on the football field and making the state of Maryland proud.
