About the Toronto Maple Leafs
Toronto Maple Leafs Tickets
There are few NHL franchises more iconic than the Toronto Maple Leafs. As one of the Original Six teams, the Maple Leafs has been around since 1917 in one form or another. They're also one of the most successful franchises in league history, having clinched 13 Stanley Cups – second only to the Montreal Canadiens, their fiercest Ontario rival.
Double Dynasty
Toronto won the very first Stanley Cup Finals in 1918, back when they were known as the Toronto Arenas. The team won the Cup again in 1922 as the Toronto St. Patricks. It wasn’t until 1927 that they adopted the name Maple Leafs, and it'd be another 15 years until they would become one of the NHL’s pre-eminent teams. The Leafs won the Stanley Cup in 1942, jumpstarting a dynasty that would eventually earn six Stanley Cup titles in a span of 10 years, including a three-peat from 1947 to 1949.
Of course, that wouldn’t be Toronto’s only Stanley Cup three-peat. The Maple Leafs captured the Cup again in 1962, 1963, and 1964. Just for good measure, they won it again in 1967, defeating the rival Canadiens in the Stanley Cup Finals for the third time in franchise history to claim four championships in a span of six years.
The Longest Drought
Unfortunately for the Maple Leafs, that 1967 championship is their most recent title. The iconic franchise has now gone over 50 years since last lifting the Cup. They’ve had plenty of good seasons during that time, including three trips to the Conference Finals during the 1990s and another in 2002.
However, the post-lockout years have been the darkest in the history of the franchise. The Maple Leafs made the playoffs just once in the 11 years following the 2004-05 lockout. Hall of Famer Brendan Shanahan took over as team President in 2014 with hopes of resurrecting the franchise to its past glory. But the Maple Leafs still have a long way to go to put an end to their championship drought. Here's hoping!
