About BLACKPINK
K-pop stands for Korean pop, but does it still apply if all the members of the band aren’t Korean? In the case of BLACKPINK, it does. Though only one of the four members was raised in Korea, they’re still popular and Korean enough to stand out as K-pop’s top all-girls band. They haven’t been on the scene that long, either, which is surprising given how much success they’ve had. For a band that’s been together less than five years, they’ve already got multiple charting hits under their belts – which is more than most groups can say.
Making the Band: BLACKPINK Edition
The band is made up of four young women, all hailing from Asian families but from different parts of the world. There’s Jisoo Kim, the lead vocalist, who grew up in Korea, and Jennie Kim, lead rapper, who grew up in New Zealand. Rose Park Chae Young and Lalisa Manoban both assist in rapping and vocals, rounding out the group.
They first got together in 2016, and quickly put out their first set of singles called Square One. It consisted of two songs, “Boombayah” and “Whistle,” which introduced their unique sound to the public. Though they may look like your classic girl group, they’re not putting out “pop princess” hits. Their music is sometimes referred to as K-trap. It has a mix of rap and pop that earns them fans from both genres.
Coloring the World BLACKPINK
Their first songs drew interest to them, but it was their self-titled 2017 album that set them up for success. It included their hit single “As If It’s Your Last,” which charted in most global markets – not just their own. Since then, they’ve put out more albums, each more successful than the last.
