About the San Francisco 49ers

San Francisco 49ers Tickets

The San Francisco 49ers are one of the oldest and proudest franchises in the NFL. To be fair, the team plays in Santa Clara, which is about 40 miles outside of San Francisco and is actually closer to San Jose. No matter their precise location, the 49ers are the kind of team that all of Silicon Valley can get behind.

There’s a good reason for the team’s popularity in the Bay Area: the 49ers were the first pro sports team to be based in San Francisco. They’ve been around since 1946, when they were a charter member of the All-America Football Conference. They officially joined the NFL a few years later in 1949 when the two leagues merged. Over the next seven decades, the franchise has had plenty of ups and downs, but the 49ers have spent large stretches of time as one of the NFL’s preeminent teams.

Remembering the Glory Days

There was a time in the ‘80s and early ‘90s when San Francisco was the “it” team in the league. The hoopla began in 1979 when Bill Walsh was tapped to become San Francisco’s head coach. He soon drafted a quarterback out of Notre Dame by the name of Joe Montana, and the rest is history. The 49ers won three Super Bowl titles between 1981 and 1988, winning at least 10 games every season during that span except for the strike-shortened ‘82 season.

Even when Walsh and eventually Montana moved on, San Francisco’s success didn’t stop. Walsh retired after winning his third Super Bowl with the 49ers, but the team repeated as Super Bowl champs the following year with George Seifert at the helm. When Steve Young eventually took the reins from Montana, the 49ers continued to be an elite team, leading the league in scoring every year from 1992 to 1995 and winning the franchise’s fifth Super Bowl in the 1994 season behind Young and Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice.

Recent Rough Patches

Despite decades of success, the 21st century has been unkind to the 49ers. The team endured an eight-season playoff drought before the arrival of Jim Harbaugh in 2011. Harbaugh instantly took the team to three consecutive NFC Championship Games, although the 49ers only made it to one Super Bowl, a game they lost to the Baltimore Ravens, ironically coached by none other than Harbaugh’s brother John.

Things took another turn after Harbaugh had a falling out with team ownership and former GM Trent Baalke, prompting Harbaugh to leave following the 2014 season. The 49ers instantly plummeted, losing at least 10 games in every season since. That’s old news, though. Between new GM John Lynch, new head coach Kyle Shanahan, and the trade for quarterback Jimmy Garaoppolo in 2018, 49ers fans are hyped about what the future holds once more.
