About the Pittsburgh Steelers

Pittsburgh Steelers Tickets

Decked out in their unmistakable black and gold jerseys, the Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the most iconic franchises in the NFL. Dating back to 1933, the Steelers are the oldest franchise in the AFC. They're also among the most successful, winning the conference and advancing to the Super Bowl eight times, which is tied for the second-most Super Bowl appearances in NFL history.

A Dynasty Emerges

The Steelers didn’t win a single NFL championship for the first four decades of their existence. In fact, between their inaugural season in 1933 and 1971, they played a total of one playoff game. But all of that started to change under head coach Chuck Noll, who took over in 1969. The Steelers won their first-ever division title in 1972 and won their first Super Bowl two years later.

Pittsburgh would own the rest of the '70s, winning back-to-back titles in 1974 and 1975 and then again in 1978 and 1979, giving them four Super Bowl wins in a span of six years. Quarterback Terry Bradshaw led the way in those days, but the real stars were on the Steel Curtain defense. Players like Joe Greene, Mel Blount, Jack Lambert, and Lynn Swann also played a huge role in the Steelers dominating an entire decade.

A Successful Successor

Noll ended up spending more than two decades as head coach of the Steelers. He retired after the 1991 season and was succeeded by Bill Cowher, who had no problem replacing a legend. He won Coach of the Year honors in his first season and led the Steelers to five division titles in his first six seasons. Cowher’s time in Pittsburgh culminated in a Super Bowl win in 2005.

One year after winning the Super Bowl, Cowher retired and was replaced by Mike Tomlin, who proceeded to give the Steelers their sixth Super Bowl in his second season at the helm. Under Tomlin, the Steelers continue to be one of the best teams in the AFC year after year, making the proud history of the franchise continue to hold up and stand the test of time.
