About the Jacksonville Jaguars

Jacksonville Jaguars Tickets

Few teams in the NFL play the role of bold underdog better than the Jacksonville Jaguars. People have been dismissing the Jags since before they were even a franchise. But time and time again, they’ve found a way to win over hearts and minds. Bravo, Jags.

The Little Team That Could

Before they got their start in 1993, few expected the Jacksonville Jaguars to ever exist. In addition to Charlotte being granted an expansion team, most people thought either St. Louis or Baltimore would get the team that would become the 30th NFL franchise. At the time, only the Packers were in a small TV market. But in the end, 26 of 28 NFL owners voted in favor of the Jaguars becoming a new franchise, and the rest was history.

Beginners Luck

If history has taught us anything, it’s that expansion franchises are supposed to toil at the bottom of the standings for years on end. But the Jaguars didn’t follow that convention. The team hired Tom Coughlin to be their head coach more than 20 months before the Jags were scheduled to play their first game. It was an unconventional move but one that paid off for the Jaguars.

After enduring a 4-12 record in their inaugural season, the Jaguars reached the AFC Championship Game, a shocking feat that was matched by their expansion cousins in the NFC, the Carolina Panthers. That season began a string of four consecutive playoff appearances for the Jaguars under Coughlin, including back-to-back division titles in ‘98 and ‘99.

Return of the King

Following a few rough seasons, Coughlin was fired, a move former owner Wayne Weaver later said was one of his biggest regrets during his time owning the Jaguars. But new owner Shahid Khan brought Coughlin back to Jacksonville as an executive in 2014. With Coughlin serving as director of football operations, the Jaguars were able to snap a nine-year playoff drought in 2017, once again reaching the AFC Championship Game.

In nearly a quarter century of existence, the Jags are still searching for their first trip to the Super Bowl. It hasn’t always been easy in one of the smallest markets in the NFL, but they’ve already accomplished more than many ever thought they would – and they’ll surely keep scratching and clawing their way to the top.
