About the Indianapolis Colts

Indianapolis Colts Tickets

The Indianapolis Colts have a slightly complicated history. They’ve swapped cities and divisions, sometimes struggling to find their rightful place within the league. But the franchise is also rich with tradition and has served as the home of some of the greatest players of all time.

Beginnings in Baltimore

Now a staple of the Midwest, the Colts actually got their start in Maryland. The modern version of the Colts began in Baltimore in 1953 and won two NFL championships before the end of the decade. The good times continued for the Colts in Baltimore with a win in Super Bowl V. Even if with win, the ending was a little ugly – the team struggled on the field while playing in an outdated stadium, prompting then-owner Robert Irsay to move the team to Indianapolis in 1983.

Days Spent with an All-Time Great

There’s no other way to say it: the early days in Indianapolis were ugly. Before the move, the Colts thought they were getting John Elway, one of the all-time greats, as their next quarterback. But he refused to come to Baltimore and forced the team to trade him to the Broncos, leading to a lot of losing seasons in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s.

Things finally took a positive turn when the Colts drafted Peyton Manning in 1998. Manning quickly solidified himself as one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game. In the process, he turned the Colts into one of the preeminent teams in the NFL. The peak of the Manning era was a win in Super Bowl XLI, the franchise’s first championship since moving to Indianapolis.

Can Lightning Strike Twice?

The Manning era in Indianapolis ended with the Colts finishing 2-14 in 2011 and Peyton sitting out the entire season due to a neck injury. However, that season gave the Colts the top pick in the draft, allowing them to select Andrew Luck. While he has yet to lead the Colts to another championship, Luck has long been considered a generational talent. As he moves into the prime of his career, the Colts are hopeful that he can still lead them to the same kind of success they experienced all those years with Manning at quarterback. Time will tell, but hopes are high that Luck is the key to the Colts’ future!
