About the Kansas City Chiefs

Kansas City Chiefs Tickets

It’s impossible to talk about pro football history without mentioning the Kansas City Chiefs. The franchise is intrinsically linked with both the NFL and the AFL and has long been one of the most recognizable franchises in the league with one of the most passionate fan bases.

In the Beginning

The Chiefs got their start as the Dallas Texans in 1960. The franchise was founded by Texas businessman Lamar Hunt, who also helped to launch the American Football League. Quickly becoming one of the best teams in the AFL under Hall of Fame coach Hank Stram, they won the AFL Championship in only their third year of existence.

But in an effort to distance themselves from the Dallas Cowboys – who were founded in the same year – Hunt moved the team to Kansas City in 1963 and rebranded as the Chiefs. Luckily, with Stram still at the helm, the on-field success didn’t stop. The Chiefs repped the AFL in the very first Super Bowl, although they lost that game to the Packers. But the Chiefs found redemption a few years later, beating the Vikings to win Super Bowl IV.

Only a Matter of Time?

Unfortunately for the Chiefs, Super Bowl IV was their last appearance in the big game. Outside of a stretch of six consecutive playoff appearances under head coach Marty Schottenheimer in the ‘90s, the Chiefs have struggled to find consistent success in the AFC West. Instead, they’ve watched the rival Broncos and Raiders collect three Super Bowl titles apiece. Bummer.

Alas, the arrival of Andy Reid as head coach in 2013 has ushered in a new era for Kansas City. Under Reid, the Chiefs have made the playoffs five times in six years. Even with a 2-5 playoff record during that span, things are looking up for the Chiefs with the emergence of quarterback Patrick Mahomes in 2018 as perhaps the next star in the NFL. With Reid and Mahomes running the show, it has the Arrowhead faithful thinking it’s only a matter of time until they win that elusive second Super Bowl trophy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do the Chiefs play?

The Chiefs play their home games at Arrowhead Stadium, which is known as one of the loudest stadiums in the NFL. In 1990, Broncos quarterback John Elway actually complained to the ref that it was too loud in the stadium, so the referee threatened to charge Kansas City with a timeout if the crowd didn’t take it down a notch. During a Monday night game in 2014, a record of 142.2 decibels was recorded at Arrowhead Stadium.

When do Chiefs tickets go on sale?

Chiefs tickets go on sale before the NFL begins its regular season. In fact, cheap Kansas City Chiefs tickets to games played at Arrowhead Stadium are available months in advance, as are Chiefs tickets for away games.
