About the Minnesota Wild

Minnesota Wild Tickets

A place like Minnesota deserves a professional hockey team. In fact, the Twin Cities probably need a hockey team more than most cities in the U.S. That’s why it was such a shame that for several years the NHL didn’t have a team in Minnesota. Fortunately, that brief but painful era came to an end in 2000 when the Minnesota Wild began to play as one of the league’s newest expansion franchises.

Empty Years

After the Minnesota North Stars relocated to Dallas in 1993, the effort to bring pro hockey back to Minnesota began almost immediately. Attempts to get an existing team to relocate failed, but when the NHL decided to expand, it presented the perfect opportunity to give the Twin Cities another franchise. Finally, the NHL granted Minnesota a team, and the Wild was born.

Almost the Same

Minnesota sports fans were hoping they’d get a winner when pro hockey returned. After all, the North Stars played in the Stanley Cup Finals just a few seasons before they left town. But it wasn’t so easy for the Wild, who missed the playoffs in eight of their first 11 seasons back in the NHL. Even a trip to the Western Conference Finals in 2003 and a division title in 2008 didn’t satisfy their desire for a winning team.

Things started to pick up a little in the 2012-13 season when the Wild snapped a four-year playoff drought and kicked off six consecutive seasons with playoff hockey. But with only two playoff series wins during those six seasons, the team has yet to satisfy their fans' hunger to win.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do the Wild play?

Since the team’s inception in 2000, the Minnesota Wild have played their home games at the Xcel Energy Center. The arena is located in the heart of St. Paul, Minnesota, not far from the banks of the Mississippi River and a short trip from downtown Minneapolis. While the Wild are the only permanent resident of the Xcel Energy Center, the venue has also been used to host the Frozen Four, professional lacrosse, and countless concerts.

When do Wild tickets go on sale?

Minnesota Wild tickets go on sale before the NHL begins its regular season. In fact, cheap Wild tickets to games played at Xcel Energy Center are available months in advance, as are Minnesota Wild tickets for away games.
