About Avenue Q
If the idea of watching a show performed by puppets makes you think of The Muppets or Sesame Street, you’re in for a big surprise. Avenue Q is dominated by puppetry, but it’s not the kind of show you’d take your kid to – or let them watch on TV. It is, however, a Tony Triple Crown winner, which is one of the highest honors a musical can get. That means it has won Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Book – all since 2003. If you don’t think that’s impressive, then we don’t know what to tell you. It’s a laugh and a half that you should get tickets to ASAP.
What’s It About?
Remember way back when (or like, right now) when you had just graduated from college and didn’t know what you were going to do with your life? There was most likely a terrible job you hated, a few embarrassing encounters with sexual partners, and roommates that left weird stuff on the floor.
That’s the cultural setting of Avenue Q, which takes place in New York, at a nightclub that doesn’t exist. Instead of teaching you about numbers, letters, and how to live in a trash can, the musical details the struggles of adult life that you’re experiencing now, or ones you’ve long since forgotten.
Kate, Princeton, and Brian
The three main characters of the play, Kate, Princeton, and Brian, work and sing together through both acts, making r-rated jokes and touching on some rather sensitive material. If you’re someone that’s easily offended, this show, like many of the comedy shows out today, isn’t for you. But if you find the idea of not being politically correct refreshing, you’ll walk out of the theater already singing the show tunes. Ready to feel like a kid again and a hopeless young adult at the same time?
