About the Los Angeles Chargers

Los Angeles Chargers Tickets

Just because you move, it doesn’t change your roots. That’s the attitude of the Los Angeles Chargers, who spent over 50 seasons in San Diego before packing their bags in 2017 and moving a few miles north to the City of Angels. The relocations marked the beginning of a new chapter in the history of a franchise that is yet to capture a Super Bowl title.

Early Success

Much was made of the Chargers moving to Los Angeles, but the franchise actually got its start in La La Land. The team spent its inaugural season in 1960 as the Los Angeles Chargers of the American Football League. However, the team struggled to draw fans to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum despite going 10-4 and reaching the AFL Championship Game. So, they went in search of greener pastures and passionate fans in San Diego.

After the move to San Diego, the Chargers continued to have success on the field. Including the 1960 season, the Chargers went to the AFL Championship five times in their first six years of existence. The one caveat is that they only won the championship once in five tries, losing twice to the Oilers and twice to the Bills, while beating the Patriots in 1963. Their run of championship appearances also ended the year before the first-ever Super Bowl.

Always Good But Never Great

After joining the NFL post-merger in 1970 and becoming a member of the AFC West division, the Chargers have done little to stand out. The team’s rivalries don’t quite compare to the hatred shared among the Broncos, Chiefs, and Raiders in their own division. The Lightning Bolts have also struggled to assert themselves as a dominant team.

During the Super Bowl era, the Chargers have reached the playoffs 14 times, which is a respectable number. However, they’ve made just four appearances in the AFC Championship Game and played in just one Super Bowl, which ended in a 49-26 thrashing at the hands of the 49ers. The franchise has enjoyed many good seasons but very few that are particularly special or memorable. Perhaps their new(ish) home in LA will turn things around!

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do the Chargers play?

Since their move to Los Angeles, the Chargers play their home games at Dignity Health Sports Park. (Rolls right off the tongue, doesn’t it?) The stadium is located in Carson, California and is best known by its previous names, the StubHub Center and the Home Depot Center. In 2020, the Chargers plan to move into their permanent home in Inglewood – but until then, they’re sharing a facility with the Los Angeles Galaxy MLS team.

In fact, cheap Los Angeles Chargers tickets to games played at Dignity Health Sports Park are available months in advance, as are Chargers tickets for away games.
