About the Cincinnati Bengals

Cincinnati Bengals Tickets

With those bright orange-striped helmets, there’s no confusing the Cincinnati Bengals with any other team. The Bengals’ presence in the AFC among rivals like the Steelers and Browns has been unmistakable over the years. Of course, the same can be said of their disappointing postseason play, as the Bengals remain one of the dozen NFL franchises yet to claim a Super Bowl title.

Do It All Paul

The Bengals played their inaugural season in 1968 as members of the AFL. The team had been founded by Paul Brown, who had previously co-founded and served as head coach of the Cleveland Browns, who were named for him. However, Brown left Cleveland in 1963 with a bitter taste in his mouth after a falling out with owner Art Modell. Naturally, his solution was to found another team, and with that, the Bengals were born.

After helping to create the Bengals, Brown then served as their first head coach, leading Cincinnati for eight seasons before retiring after the 1975 season. Despite retiring from coaching, Brown stayed with the Bengals as team president until he passed away in 1991. During that time, he saw the team make it to two Super Bowls, only to fall short by less than a touchdown on both occasions.

Falling Further Away

The closest the Bengals came to winning a Super Bowl came during the 1988 season. The team went 12-4 that season and had league MVP Boomer Esiason leading the way at quarterback. But they allowed a 4th quarter lead to slip away, with Joe Montana and the 49ers scoring a touchdown in the final minute of the game to win 20-16.

Since that loss, the Bengals have just one postseason win to their name. That win came in 1990, meaning it’s been nearly three decades since Cincinnati has experienced a playoff win. The Marvin Lewis era brought them four division titles and seven playoff appearances. But zero playoff wins were had during the time, and now the Bengals appear to be starting from scratch with up-and-coming coach Zac Taylor taking the reins in 2019.
