UF was a good but not great football program for much of its history. But that started to change in 1990 when Steve Spurrier, who won the Heisman while playing quarterback for the Gators, returned to Gainesville as the team’s head coach. During his 12 seasons in charge, UF averaged just over 10 wins per season and finished the season ranked in the top-10 nearly every season.
