The Old Ball Coach
UF was a good but not great football program for much of its history. But that started to change in 1990 when Steve Spurrier, who won the Heisman while playing quarterback for the Gators, returned to Gainesville as the team’s head coach. During his 12 seasons in charge, UF averaged just over 10 wins per season and finished the season ranked in the top-10 nearly every season. Most importantly, he turned the Gators into an SEC powerhouse, winning the conference title six times, including a stretch of four in a row from 1993 to 1996 that culminated in UF’s first-ever national championship.
Master and Apprentice
Spurrier’s accomplishments at UF were virtually impossible for his successor Ron Zook to follow. But they weren’t too much for Urban Meyer, who arrived in 2005 and almost immediately got the Gators back on top. Meyer guided UF to national championships in 2006 and 2008, reestablishing the Gators as a national power. Once again, UF struggled to find a suitable replacement for a head-coaching legend. However, in 2018, they brought back Dan Mullen, who served as Florida’s offensive coordinator under Meyer. He instantly made the Gators a top-10 team that will continue to strive to win SEC and national championships in the years to come.
