Southern Football Tickets
Wins and losses aside, there aren’t many college football programs at the FCS level that are better known than the Southern Jaguars. Among black colleges, the Jaguars are one of the oldest and most prestigious, which is why last-minute Southern football tickets have always been a hot commodity in the Louisiana capital of Baton Rouge. The program’s history has been filled with noteworthy rivalries, championships, and a surprising number of famous coaches and players. That being said, it can be surprisingly easy to find cheap Southern football tickets, making the Jaguars one of the best values in college football.
Ace in the Hole
Longtime coach A. W. “Ace” Mumford is the biggest reason why Southern football is a known commodity throughout the college football world. Mumford is among the winningest coaches in college football history, coaching the Jaguars from 1936 to 1961. During that time, he led Southern to 10 SWAC championships and five black college national championships, with those accomplishments being enough to put him in the College Football Hall of Fame. The best years for Southern under Mumford came from 1948 to 1950 when the Jaguars went undefeated in three straight seasons, going 32-0-2 while winning three straight conference titles and three straight black national championships. That run, and Mumford’s legacy have helped make Southern the football program it is today.
On the Prowl Again
While Southern’s dominance under Mumford didn’t last forever, the Jaguars came alive again during the 1990s under head coach Pete Richardson. After a 33-year wait, Richardson led Southern to another SWAC championship and black national title in 1993. The 1993 season would be the first of five conference titles and black national championships that Southern would win over the next 11 seasons, once again becoming the kings of the SWAC and one of the top programs at the FCS level. The Jaguars have been a force in the SWAC ever since, giving Southern football a future that is on par with the program’s proud history.
