It’s not easy being a college team in a pro town, but the Buffalo Bulls are making it work. Back for Good

While Buffalo first fielded a football team in 1894, the school has endured several periods in which it didn’t play football. Fortunately, football returned for good in 1977 with the Bulls competing as a junior college and Division III program for many years. In 1993, Buffalo struggled after moving all the way to the FCS level. Despite just one winning season in six years, the Bulls took another step forward in 1999 by joining the FBS level as a member of the MAC.

Turn It Around

There’s no sugar-coating how rough it was for Buffalo for many years after joining the MAC. However, everything started to change with head coach Turner Gill, who took over the program in 2006. In his third season, Gill led the Bulls to their first winning season since 1996 and the first bowl game in program history, a seminal moment in the history of Buffalo football.

New Heights

Unfortunately, the Bulls had a backslide when Gill left for a better job. Fortunately, the program was rejuvenated again under head coach Lance Leipold, who took the job in 2015 after leading Wisconsin-Whitewater to six Division III national championships in eight years. In 2018, Leipold took Buffalo to the MAC Championship Game for the first time. A year later, Leipold and the Bulls won a bowl game for the first time in program history. Those were two huge steps in the right direction that indicate that the best for Buffalo football could be yet to come.
