Football fandom in the state of Georgia runs deep, and that includes the Georgia Southern Eagles. Back From the Dead

At the onset of World War II, Georgia Southern canceled its football program after the 1941 season. The university didn’t bring the program back until the 1982 season. To the surprise of many, the Eagles were an instant success at the I-AA level under head coach Erik Russell. In their fourth year back, the Eagles won the I-AA national championship. That would become the first of four national championships Georgia Southern would win in the next six seasons, including a perfect 15-0 season in 1989. Just for good measure, the Eagles won back-to-back I-AA championships in 1999 and 2000, giving the Eagles six national titles.

Flying High

After an incredible run of success that included six national championships and 10 Southern Conference titles, Georgia Southern made the jump to the FBS level in 2014. The Eagles joined the Sun Belt Conference, winning the conference championship in their first season. A year later, Georgia Southern reached a bowl game for the first time in program history. Ever since, the Eagles have remained one of the best programs in the Sun Belt under coach Chad Lunsford, who has turned the Eagles into a well-oiled machine. Much like the Eagles once dominated the I-AA level and the Southern Conference, Georgia Southern is poised to win a lot of Sun Belt championships and be a top mid-major program in the years to come.
