The Rock That Built Everything
While Notre Dame began playing football in 1887, the program’s history truly began in 1918 when Knute Rockne became head coach of the Irish. Rockne is regarded by most as the greatest college football coach of all-time. In addition to polarizing the forward pass, Rockne made Notre Dame a national power. In 13 seasons before his untimely death, Rockne recorded a record of 105-12-5 at Notre Dame. He led the Fighting Irish to five undefeated seasons and the first three national championships in program history.
The Next Legend
Replacing Rockne was virtually impossible, but one of his former players, Frank Leahy, came close to filling his shoes. Across two stints as Notre Dame head coach, Leahy coached the Irish to four national championships, making them the best team of the 1940s. With a record of 87-11-9, the Hall of Famer ranks second behind Rockne in all-time winning percentage among Notre Dame coaches.
The Modern Irishman
Despite winning four more national titles during the second half of the 20th century, Notre Dame has never been able to match the legacies of Rockne and Leahy. Nevertheless, the Fighting Irish have remained nationally relevant under head coach Brian Kelly, who has the perfect name to be the coach of the Irish. In his third season, Kelly took Notre Dame to the National Championship Game, helping restore some of the program’s pride. Kelly has embraced Notre Dame’s history and continues to put together teams that begin every season with realistic hopes of competing for a national championship.
