Let’s Get It Started

The Cardinals played their first-ever football season in 2009, doing so as a Division II independent before joining the Lone Star Conference the following year. Naturally, times were tough during those first few seasons. The program’s first head coach Mike Santiago was let go after just three seasons. The Cardinals also took a risk when they moved from Division II to the FCS level in 2013 after just four years as a program. However, the 2013 season turned out to be Incarnate Word’s first winning campaign in program history, helping lay down a foundation for future success.

The First of Many

In 2018, the Cardinals hired Eric Morris as their new head coach, and he quickly took the program to new heights. In his first season, Morris led Incarnate Word to a share of the Southland Conference championship with longtime powerhouse Nicholls State. The team’s 6-4 regular season also earned the Cardinals their first-ever bid to the FCS Playoffs. Needless to say, it was a huge step in the right direction for Incarnate Word and a sign that the Cardinals are set up to win more championships and playoff appearances in the years to come.
