In the world of FCS football, one of the up-and-coming programs to watch is the Missouri State Bears. Throughout their history, the Bears have always found a way to keep moving up the ladder and reaching the next level. Always a Trailblazer

The Bears played their first season of college football in 1909. Back then, the school was known as Southwest Missouri State and played as an independent. In 1924, in the middle of the tenure of legendary coach Arthur Briggs, the Bears became a founding member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. They stayed in the conference until 1981, winning seven conference titles along the way. After moving up to the FCS level in 1981, Missouri State was once again the founding member of its conference, helping to launch what is now known as the Missouri Valley Football Conference.

After moving from Division II to the FCS level in 1981, Missouri State continued to work its way to prominence. The Bears reached the FCS Playoffs for the first time in 1989, making it all the way to the quarterfinals. While things would start to fall apart for the Bears after the turn of the century, they didn’t stay down for long. Following a disastrous season in 2019, Missouri State hired Bobby Petrino as the new head coach, who took them from worst to first in the Missouri Valley Conference in just one season, getting the Bears back to the FCS Playoffs and setting the stage for a bright future.
