The history of New Hampshire football dates back to 1893. Outside of the years during the two World Wars, the Wildcats have fielded a football team every year. During that time, the Wildcats have had fewer than two dozen head coaches, thanks to many coaches staying at New Hampshire for long periods, including Sean McDonnell, who coached from 1999 to 2021. During their long history, the Wildcats have also forged many meaningful rivalries, including in-state foe Dartmouth and border rivalries with Maine and UMass.

Of course, New Hampshire is far more than just an old college football program; it’s also been a largely successful program. The Wildcats have won over a dozen conference championships in their history, becoming a powerhouse in the Atlantic 10 Conference before moving to the Colonial Athletic Association in 2007. In fact, since the turn of the century, New Hampshire has become a regular participant in the FCS Playoffs, reaching the playoffs every year from 2004 to 2017. That 14-year stretch includes nine trips to the quarterfinals and two appearances in the semifinals, showing that New Hampshire is an FCS program that’s capable of competing at a championship level.
