The Upset of a Lifetime

Head coaches Dirk Koetter and Dan Hawkins both deserve a lot of credit for building up the Boise State football program during the early part of the 21st century. It all began in Petersen’s first season when Boise State capped off a 13-0 season with an upset of Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl. Somehow, they topped that by scoring the game-winning 2-point conversion by running the Statue of Liberty play.

Living at the Top

The great thing about Boise State’s story is that it didn’t end after that amazing win over Oklahoma. Petersen led the Broncos to four more conference titles and three top-10 finishes during his tenure. He then left the program in the hands of Bryan Harsin, who has continued the tradition of Boise State being a top-25 program. The Broncos have reached heights that programs outside the power conferences can only dream of reaching. However, because Boise State did it, the dreams of other programs don’t seem so impossible, making the Broncos one of the most important college football programs in the country.
