Original Orange
It’s fitting that Bucknell’s primary colors are orange and blue because the Bison were participants in the first-ever Orange Bowl on New Year’s Day 1935. At the time, Bucknell was one of the most established college football programs in the country. After going 6-2-2 during the regular season, the Bison spent two days on a train to Miami to play in the Orange Bowl. In the end, the trip was worth it after the Bison beat the Miami Hurricanes 26-0.
Finding Their Place
The Bison have spent most of their football history roaming the college football landscape as an independent. They briefly found a home in the Middle Atlantic States College Athletic Corporation in the 1960s as a Division III program. But after moving up to the FCS level in 1978, the Bison finally found a permanent home when they joined the Patriot League in 1986. A decade later, Bucknell won a conference championship for the first time in program history, solidifying themselves as members of the Patriot League. Being in the Patriot League gives the Bison a fighting chance to compete for championships while also ensuring yearly matchups against their top rivals, including in-state foes Lehigh and Lafayette.
