The South has always been crazy for football, and as a result, it’s giving birth to some up-and-coming college football programs. The Nicholls State Colonels appear to be one of those programs. As a young program in a small town, it’s relatively easy to find cheap Nicholls State football tickets. The Colonels have also begun building some intense rivalries. Slowly but surely, Nicholls State football is starting to put itself on the map, which means last-minute Nicholls State football tickets will start to become a hot commodity in the years to come.

The Climb

The Colonels played their first football season in 1972, spending most of their early years at the Division II level, even winning a conference title in 1975. In 1980, moved to the FCS level as an independent outsider of three seasons spent in the Gulf Star Conference, including a 10-3 campaign in 1986 when Nicholls State finished 12th in the FCS polls. The Colonels finally found a more permanent home in 1992 when they joined the Southland Conference, putting them in the same league as several in-state rivals, including Southeastern Louisiana and Northwestern State.

A Push for the Top

Nicholls State experienced far more losing seasons than winning seasons early in its tenure in the Southland Conference. Outside of a conference title in 2005, the Colonels didn’t have a lot of memorable years. Things hit rock bottom with a 0-12 season in 2014 after winning just six games in the previous three seasons. However, Tim Rebowe was hired after that season and immediately rebuilt the program. By 2017, the Colonels reached the FCS Playoffs and then proceeded to win back-to-back conference championships in 2018 and 2019. Rebowe ushered in a new ear of Nicholls State football, giving the Colonels a bright future.
