About the Virginia Football

Virginia Football Tickets

The history of college football can’t be told without the Virginia Cavaliers. Despite some rough years over the last decade or so, leading to cheap Virginia football tickets being widely available, the Cavaliers were the first big-time football program in the South. Amidst some peaks and valleys over more than a century of playing football, the Cavs have the kind of history that few programs can match, which is why last-minute Virginia football tickets remain throughout the Commonwealth.

The First Superpower

UVA began playing organized football in 1888. They were one of the first schools in the South to play football and recorded 28 straight winning seasons, often claiming Southern championships even before the creation of the South Atlantic Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The Cavaliers would go on to help create the Southern Conference, which is one of the oldest college football conferences that remains active.

The Long Wait

While UVA was one of the first Southern football powers, the Cavaliers endured many decades of futility until the arrival of Hall of Fame head coach George Welsh in 1982. Welsh took over a program that looked dead in the water and brought UVA back to life. During his 19 seasons, Welsh turned UVA into a stable program that had 16 winning seasons and won ACC championships in 1989 and 1995. When he retired in 2000, Welsh was the all-time ACC leader in wins.

Riding a Bronco

After Welsh retired, the Cavaliers remained stable for a few seasons before eventually faltering, qualifying for just one bowl game between 2008 and 2016. However, head coach Bronco Mendenhall proved to be the latest savior of Virginia football. In 2019, Mendenhall helped UVA snap a 15-game losing streak to in-state rival UVA Tech, reach the ACC Championship Game for the first time in program history, and play in the Orange Bowl, another first for the program. That season helped set the stage for the Cavaliers to return to the place where they started when they were one of the best football teams in the South.

Between the grass hill and the rest of the stands, the capacity at Scott Stadium is 61,500 fans.
