Creating a top-notch football program has never come easy to the Howard Bison. Being located in the nation’s capital has never made it easy to recruit or create a lot of demand for last-minute Howard football tickets. But the Bison have found a way to grab the spotlight every now and then. More importantly, with several prominent rivalries among the MEAC and other HBCUs, the Bison are always playing high-intensity games, making cheap Howard football tickets high in entertainment value.

The Early Days

Howard football has a long history that dates back to 1893. After playing as an independent for many years, the Bison joined the Central Intercollegiate Athletics Association in 1912 and had instant success. Howard won the conference title in 1912 in the program’s fourth straight undefeated season. The Bison also enjoyed plenty of success during the 1920s, finishing undefeated four times and winning the Black College National Championship three times.

A Long Wait

After Howard’s success during the 1920s, it was a long time until the Bison were back on anybody’s radar. That being said, Howard put together a magical 1993 season under head coach Steve Wilson. The Bison won the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title for the first time, the Black College National Championship for the first time since 1926, and made the program’s first-ever appearance in the FCS Playoffs. It remains the greatest season in Howard football history and will be a difficult one to top.

One Magic Moment

Outside of the 1993 season, the Bison have another claim to fame that no other college football program can match. In 2017, Howard played a game against an FBS program UNLV. At kickoff, the Bison were considered 45.5-point underdogs, giving them little chance of winning on the surface. But Howard pulled off a near-impossible win, knocking off UNLV 43-40. It was Howard’s first-ever win over an FBS program and the largest point-spread upset in college football history, giving the Bison a record that might never be broken.
