The Legend

Colorado began playing football in 1890. In 1895, Fred Folsom took over as head coach and began his legendary tenure with the Buffaloes. Between 1895 and 1915, Folsom had three separate stints as head coach, compiling a record of 77-23-2 over 15 seasons. During that time, he led Colorado to nine conference championships, setting up the Buffaloes for continued success throughout the first half of the 20th century.

The Eight Ball

During the second half of the 20th century, Colorado was a member of the Big Eight Conference. More years than not, they were one of the better teams in the league. The Buffs had their best stretch since Folsom’s days when Bill McCartney took over as head coach. Starting in 1985, McCartney led Colorado to nine bowl games in a 10-year span. That stretch included the school’s first national championship in 1990, which came by virtue of a 10-9 Orange Bowl win over Notre Dame.

Pac-12 Blues

After being a founding member of the Big 12 in 1996, Colorado struggled to sustain success in its new conference. The Buffs won the Big 12 in 2001 but soon started to stumble. Things didn’t get much better for Colorado after moving to the Pac-12 in 2011. Outside of a 10-4 season and Pac-12 South Division title in 2016, the Buffaloes have struggled to find traction in the Pac-12. However, given the proud history of Colorado football, it should only be a matter of time until they find their way and climb to the top.

Big 12 Bound

In the 2024 season, Colorado is making a significant move by rejoining the Big 12 Conference, a league they helped found in 1996. After years of mixed results in the Pac-12, highlighted by a memorable 10-4 season in 2016, the Buffaloes are eager to rekindle old rivalries and establish new traditions. This transition marks a fresh start and an exciting opportunity for Colorado to leverage its proud football history and compete at a high level in the Big 12. Fans and alumni alike are optimistic that this move will pave the way for renewed success and a return to prominence on the national stage.
