As the 22nd team to join Major League Soccer in the US, Atlanta United burst onto the scene in 2017 as an expansion team and hasn’t looked back since. The inaugural season for Atlanta United was a rip-roaring success no matter how you slice it. Unlike expansion teams in many other major league sports, Atlanta came out of the gates strong and finished even stronger. In fact, the team generated so much buzz from their performance that they began setting single-game attendance records at the newly-completed Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Atlanta United ended their first season in a spectacular finish that saw them clinch a spot in the 2017 playoffs by battling to a tie for third place in the Eastern Conference. They're one of only three MLS expansion teams to ever accomplish such a feat in their first season!

2018 Greatness and Beyond

Atlanta United didn't advance any further in the 2017 playoffs, but the next year would be a whole different story. Not only did the team make it to the playoffs for the second year in a row, but they also went on to bring the trophy home in a spectacular string of victories to bag the MLS Cup. Atlanta was proud that year, considering it marked the first time since 1995 (when the Braves won the World Series) that a major pro sports team would bring a championship back home.
