Yet the planning and construction phases associated with Audi Field stretch back years before that, thanks to DC United’s quest to find the perfect site for their own venue that they wouldn’t have to share with other local teams like the Washington Nationals. Planning began back in 2004, with the team submitting a number of construction site bids to the city but they kept getting rejected. It wasn’t until 2011 that a site would finally be selected – meanwhile, construction wouldn’t actually start until 2017!
