Georgetown Basketball Tickets
There is perhaps no better conference in college basketball history than the Big East, and for as long as the league has existed, the Georgetown Hoyas have been a part of it. Finding cheap Georgetown basketball tickets has never been easy, and that remains true today. The Hoyas are an important part of the Big East and continue to play their biggest rivals regularly. As a result, getting last-minute Georgetown basketball tickets usually means watching an intense and competitive college basketball game.
Big John
For all intents and purposes, there is no Georgetown basketball without John Thompson Jr. The 6’10’’ Thompson, who went by the nickname Big John, backed up Bill Russell for a couple of years with the Celtics before going into coaching. He turned the Hoyas from nothing into something, recruiting the likes of Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Mourning, and Dikembe Mutombo, who helped transform the program into a national power.
Beasts of the East
Thompson was there when Georgetown helped to create the Big East in 1979. More importantly, he helped make the Hoyas one of the league’s first powerhouse programs and the first Big East member to win a national championship, doing so in 1984. Big John ended up coaching Georgetown for a quarter-century, turning the Hoyas into one of the most storied programs in college basketball during the 1980s and 90s.
The Prodigal Sons
After Big John retired in 1999, the Hoyas fell on some hard times. However, his son, John Thompson III, took over at Georgetown a few years later to get the program back on track. He made the Hoyas regular participants in the NCAA Tournament, and despite a few early-round exits, Thompson managed to lead Georgetown to the Final Four in 2007. When things began to fizzle under the younger Thompson, the Hoyas turned to Ewing, arguably the best player in program history, to serve as head coach and make Georgetown the powerhouse they were when Ewing was a player.
