About the Minnesota Basketball
Minnesota Basketball Tickets
If history means anything, the Minnesota Golden Gophers should be considered one of the best basketball programs in the Big Ten. In recent decades, the program has struggled amidst a few scandals, making cheap Minnesota basketball tickets easy to find. But the Golden Gophers still have a lot of pride and history. They’ve also shown some signs of life in recent years, making last-minute Minnesota basketball tickets a hot commodity in the Twin Cities.
A Long and Winding Road
Minnesota’s golden era came during the first 20 years of the 20th century. They were awarded retroactive national championships for 1902 and 1903, going undefeated both seasons. They also won five conference titles during the early days of the Big Ten, as well as a Helms national championship after another undefeated season in 1919. Unfortunately, that was followed by nearly 50 years of struggles, winning just one conference championship between 1919 and 1972.
Finding Their Way
The Golden Gophers started to come alive again under head coach Clem Haskins, who took them to the Sweet 16 in 1989 and the Elite Eight in 1990. That was followed by NIT championships in 1993 and 1998 and four NCAA Tournament appearances in a six-year span, including a miraculous Final Four run in 1997. Alas, most of those accomplishments were wiped from the record books because of an academic fraud scandal.
Recovery
It took time for Minnesota to recover from that scandal. However, veteran head coach Tubby Smith gave the program a jumpstart, getting the Golden Gophers back to the NCAA Tournament three times during his six seasons in Minneapolis. Richard Pitino took over from there, winning an NIT title in 2014 and earning NCAA Tournament berths in 2017 and 2019. Under Pitino, there is hope that the Golden Gophers have a long-term coach who will stay at Minnesota for the long-run and return the program to the kind of success it experienced a century ago.
