It’s no secret that the state of North Carolina is one of the epicenters of the college basketball world. Within that state is one of the game’s biggest gems, the UNC Greensboro Spartans. The First Time

The college basketball world first met the Spartans in 1996 when UNC Greensboro made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Spartans won the Big South regular-season title the previous season, only to falter in the conference tournament. But under first-year head coach Randy Peele, UNC Greensboro won both the regular-season and conference title in 1996. The no. 15 seed Spartans also gave a strong accounting of themselves in the Big Dance, only losing to Cincinnati by five points.

Say Yes to Wes

After their first NCAA Tournament game, the Spartans soon learned that sustained success doesn’t come easy. UNC Greensboro returned to the Big Dance in 2001 but soon entered a dark period. However, when Wes Miller arrived as Greensboro’s head coach in 2011, he quickly got the program moving in the right direction. Starting in 2016, Miller took the Spartans to a postseason tournament in four straight seasons. More importantly, UNC Greensboro won the Southern Conference regular-season title in both 2017 and 2018. In fact, the Spartans finished the 2017-18 campaign with a 27-7 record, including a near-upset of Gonzaga in the NCAA Tournament. With a string of 20-plus win seasons under Miller, the Spartans have become yet another basketball school in the Tar Heel State that’s worth watching.
