Despite all of the years that little attention was paid to Florida State basketball, the Seminoles had some impressive feats. Under head coach Hugh Durham, FSU was the national runner-up in 1972. Pat Kennedy did his best to push the program forward, taking the ‘Noles into the ACC in 1991, reaching the Sweet 16 in 1992, and going all the way to the Elite Eight in 1993.

The Next Level

While the Seminoles experienced periodic success on the basketball court for several decades, Florida State reached a whole new level after Leonard Hamilton took over in 2002. Much like Rome wasn’t built in a day, it took Hamilton time to turn the Seminoles around. FSU didn’t reach the NCAA Tournament under Hamilton until his seventh season in 2009. But things took off after that with the Seminoles reaching the Sweet 16 in 2011 and winning the ACC Tournament in 2012. But that wasn’t the end of FSU’s ascent. The Seminoles reached the Elite Eight in 2018, the Sweet 16 in 2019, and won the ACC regular-season title outright in 2020, finally reaching the top of one of the best conferences in college basketball.
