About the New York Red Bulls

New York Red Bulls Tickets

In sports, sometimes it's all in the name. The New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer feel like a recent expansion team because of their flashy brand and trendy name. But they're actually a founding member of the league and began play in 1996 as the New York/New Jersey MetroStars. Obviously, a lot has changed since then, but unfortunately for the club, their quest for their first-ever MLS title has not.

Missing the Star Power

Despite being dubbed the MetroStars during their first 10 seasons of existence, New York’s original MLS franchise didn’t put together too many star performances. Outside of having the best record in the Eastern Conference during the 2000 season, the MetroStars rarely made much noise. In fact, the 2000 season was the only time in those 10 years that the club advanced beyond the quarterfinals of the MLS playoffs.

Close But No Cigar

After changing their name to the New York Red Bulls in 2006, things gradually began to pick up. The club reached the MLS Cup for the first time in 2008, only to lose 3-1 to the Columbus Crew. In 2010, the Red Bulls signed French legend Thierry Henry and immediately finished atop the Eastern Conference standings for the first time in a decade, a feat that would be repeated four more times in the next eight seasons, including three Supporters’ Shield trophies in 2013, 2015, and 2018.

Alas, an MLS Cup win still eludes the franchise. Behind the likes of Bradley Wright-Phillips, Daniel Royer, goalkeeper Luis Robles, and others, the Red Bulls have become one of the most competitive teams in MLS year after year. However, they’ve yet to put it all together and win a championship in more than two decades as a franchise. Here's hoping.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Red Bulls play at the aptly named Red Bull Arena, which is located in Harrison, New Jersey on the banks of the Passaic River roughly seven miles from Manhattan. It’s one of the largest soccer-specific stadiums in the country and is sometimes referred to as The Cathedral of American Soccer. In addition to hosting the Red Bulls and U.S. National Team games, Red Bull Arena hosts rugby, lacrosse, and friendly matches between European soccer teams.
