There’s no confusing the Maine Black Bears football team with a powerhouse program or confusing the state of Maine with a football hotbed. As an FCS program, it’s relatively easy for fans to find cheap Maine football tickets. But whether the team is good or bad, fans in The Pine Tree State love the Black Bears and always come out to support the only Division I football program in the state. The program has existed since 1892, and the fanbase is as supportive as ever, which always creates a high demand for last-minute Maine football tickets.

Yankee Doodle Dandy

While Maine has more than a century’s worth of football history, a big chunk of that history was spent in the famous Yankee Conference, which the Black Bears called home from 1947 to 1996. While Maine didn’t receive much national attention in that conference, playing in the Yankee Conference allowed the Black Bears to develop fierce rivalries with many other northeastern schools, most notably border rival New Hampshire. Maine also had plenty of good seasons toward the top of the league, winning at least a share of the Yankee Conference title nine times between 1949 and 1989.

The Best is Yet to Come

Since leaving the Yankee conference in 1997, Maine football has had an upward trajectory. They joined the Atlantic 10 Conference in 1997 and soon won the first two FCS Playoff games in program history in 2001 and 2002. A move to the Colonial Athletic Conference in 2007 was another step up the ladder for Maine. During the 2010s, the Black Bears became regular contenders in the Colonial, winning the conference championship in 2013 and 2018. In fact, Maine’s 2018 season brought the Black Bears all the way to the FCS Semifinals. It was the best season in program history and a sign that the best for Maine football is yet to come.
