In college football, it seems like there is always room for one more. The Southern Utah Thunderbirds are one program that’s putting that to the test. Southern Utah has only been playing football since 1963. For much of that time, it’s been easy to find cheap Southern Utah football tickets because the Thunderbirds were new and easy to overlook in a state with other big-time football programs. However, the Thunderbirds have done a great job of working their way up the pecking order and reaching the FCS level. Not only that, but the Thunderbirds have become a program that’s capable of competing for conference titles and playoff appearances, leading to a massive demand for last-minute Southern Utah football tickets.

A Long Flight

Even though Southern Utah football is much younger than most college football programs, the Thunderbirds have endured a long journey. They’ve moved from the NAIA level to Division II and the FCS level while being members in more than half a dozen conferences in just over half a century. Ultimately, Southern Utah became a part of the United Athletic Conference in 2023 with the hope that the program has found a long-term, permanent home.

Rising Up

Despite the fact that the Thunderbirds have constantly moved conferences and most of their head coaches leave the program with a losing record, Southern Utah football has managed to make strides on the field. Head coach Ed Lamb took the Thunderbirds to new heights, leading the team to a conference title in 2010 and the program’s first appearance in the FCS Playoffs in 2013. Southern Utah returned to the FCS Playoffs in both 2015 and 2017 after winning Big Sky Conference championships. Despite being unable to build off that success, the Thunderbirds have set the bar high for what Southern Utah is capable of achieving in the future.
