While the state of Texas is traditionally more of a hotbed for college football than for college basketball, that’s starting to change. Believe it or not, the Stephen F. The First Time

Outside of a Southland regular-season title in 1987, the Lumberjacks didn’t accomplish much on the basketball court until winning the Southland regular-season title again in 2008. Stephen F. Austin won the regular-season title again the following year, as well as the Southland Conference Tournament, sending the Lumberjacks to the NCAA Tournament for the first time. While they lost their debut in the Big Dance in 2009 to Syracuse, the Lumberjacks made it back to the NCAA Tournament again in 2014. This time, Stephen F. Austin upset VCU to earn the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament win, putting the Lumberjacks on the map.

Just the Beginning

Stephen F. Austin’s first-round victory in 2014 wasn’t the end of the program’s ascent. In fact, the 2014 season was the second of four consecutive Southland regular-season titles for the Lumberjacks and the first of four NCAA Tournament appearances in a five-year span. In 2016, the Lumberjacks pulled off another first-round upset, knocking off West Virginia to advance to the Round of 32 for the second time in three years. Stephen F. Austin rose in the mid-major ranks so quickly that the Lumberjacks were invited to join the Western Athletic Conference in 2021. The Lumberjacks made a great first impression by winning the WAC regular-season title in their first season, making it clear that Stephen F. Austin basketball is here to stay.
