Far too often, football programs at the FCS level get lost in the shuffle. But that shouldn’t be the case for a program like the Murray State Racers. While nowadays it’s relatively easy to find cheap Murray State football tickets, the program has a long history of producing All-Americans and hosting prominent coaches on their way up the ladder. The Racers have found a long-term home in the Ohio Valley Conference and have occasionally found their way to the top of the conference, helping to keep last-minute Murray State football tickets in high demand in the southwestern corner of Kentucky.

The Best of Times

Unfortunately for Murray State, sustained success has been a rarity for the program. However, there have been periods when the Racers put together several great seasons in a short period of time. For instance, they won three Ohio Valley titles in a four-year span from 1948 to 1951. The Racers also won back-to-back conference championships in 1995 and 1996. Murray State also went to the FCS Playoffs in both of those seasons, picking up their first-ever playoff win in 1996 by beating Western Illinois.

Always a Rivalry Game

One thing that has fueled interest in Murray State football over many decades is the fact that the Racers have so many longstanding rivalries. Western Kentucky has long been Murray State’s closest and most bitter rival despite WKU moving to the FBS level. The Racers have also forged an in-state rivalry with Eastern Kentucky, as well as several schools in neighboring states, including Tennessee-Martin, Austin Peay, and Southeast Missouri State. Year after year, a big chunk of Murray State’s schedule is made up of rivalries, making every game meaningful.
