New England is a little light on prominent college football teams, but the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils surely qualify as an exception. As a small-time program, it’s easy for fans to get their hands on cheap Central Connecticut State football tickets. However, that might start to change in the coming years. The Blue Devils have made an impressive rise through the ranks and are now becoming a force to be reckoned with at the FCS level. Humble Beginnings

During the early days of CCSU football, the Blue Devils were nothing special. The program’s all-time record remains under .500, including many years at the NAIA and Division II levels. However, there were periods of success, particularly under longtime head coach Bill Loika, who coached the Blue Devils from 1964 to 1981. During his tenure, CCSU won four Eastern Football Conference titles, including three in a row from 1972 to 1974, before the Blue Devils became independent.

Moving Up the Food Chain

In 1993, Central Connecticut State made the step up to the FCS level, ultimately joining the Northeast Conference a few years later. It took more than a decade, but the Blue Devils finally found some success in their new conference. Tom Masella led CCSU to back-to-back conference titles in 2004 and 2005 before passing the torch to Jeff McInerney, who led the Blue Devils to conference championships in 2009 and 2010. Central Connecticut State went on to win Northeast Conference titles in 2017 and 2019, which resulted in the Blue Devils playing in the FCS Playoffs for the first time. It was another step forward for Central Connecticut State, a football program that continues to grow and has the potential to get even better in the years to come.
