About Raymond James Stadium

Raymond James Stadium

Known affectionately as Ray Jay to its fans (and Community Investment Tax Stadium to its detractors), Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida is a 65,000 open-air multi-use stadium that can be expanded up to 75,000 temporarily for big events like the Super Bowl. Whether it’s NFL games, NCAA football, MLS soccer matches, or more, this arena has what you’re looking for in a sports venue.

History of Raymond James Stadium

Shortly after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was bought out in 1995, new owner Malcolm Glazer started lobbying hard and fast for a new place for the Bucs to play. The squeaky wheel gets the kick, and by 1998 Ray Jay had opened its doors for the first time. The rest, as they say, is history – though as the arena has continued to age it’s been renovated extensively to keep it as modern as possible. The latest of these refurb efforts, along with its more than $100 million price tag, was in 2016.

What Makes Raymond James Stadium Events So Special?

Ray Jay is a great football stadium with a lot of personality. It starts with the massive pirate ship replica at the north end zone – it’s more than 100 feet long and it’s equipped with a bunch of replica pirate cannons that fire off whenever the Bucs score or win a game. Patrons toss merch from the ship into the stands a number of times throughout the game, and a radio-controlled talking parrot statue on the ship also calls out and interacts with fans as well. If you’re a fan of Pirates of the Carribean (the movie or the ride), it’s a fun time to be sure!
