Little Rock Basketball Tickets

The state of Arkansas is one of the secret hotbeds of college basketball, and that includes the University of Little Rock Trojans. Compared to the state’s flagship basketball program, it’s relatively easy to find cheap Little Rock basketball tickets. But the Trojans have a strong following as well, and from time to time, they’ve been able to leave their mark on the college basketball world. More importantly, the future for the program appears to be bright, which means the demand for last-minute Little Rock basketball tickets is likely to remain high for the foreseeable future.

Breaking the Ice

Little Rock basketball burst onto the college basketball scene in a big way in 1986. Before then, the Trojans were a relatively unknown member of what is now the Atlantic Sun Conference. But that changed when they won the regular-season and conference tournament championships to reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time. As a 14 seed, the Trojans upset Notre Dame to win their first-ever game in the Big Dance. Little Rock nearly reached the Sweet 16 after pushing NC State to overtime in the next round. Head coach Mike Newell brought the Trojans back to the NCAA Tournament in 1989 and 1990, making them a feared mid-major during that time.

The Second Wave

After the 1990 NCAA Tournament, Little Rock basketball went south for a while, as the Trojans struggled to keep up after moving to the Sun Belt Conference in 1991. However, after Steve Shields took over as head coach in 2003, he slowly rebuilt the program. Shields made Little Rock a genuine contender in the Sun Belt, culminating in a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2011. In 2015, Shields left Little Rock as the winningest coach in program history. His successor, Chris Beard, led the Trojans on a magical season that saw Little Rock finish 30-5 and win a game in the NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history.

Walking into the Future

While Beard only stayed at Little Rock for one season, he left a blueprint for success. In 2018, former NBA player and coach Darrell Walker became the head coach of the Trojans. He took Little Rock from 11th in the Sun Belt in his first season to Sun Belt regular-season champions in his second season, setting the stage for even greater success in the years to come.
