In the history of West Coast hoops, it’s impossible to overlook the San Jose State Spartans. But the Spartans have a long and proud history with plenty of conference titles and players who have gone on to play in the NBA. As members of the Mountain West Conference, the Spartans play in one of the most respected mid-major conferences in the country. That has created a huge demand for last-minute San Jose State basketball tickets, as the Spartans compete at a high level and regularly face quality opponents, giving San Jose State a chance to work its way up from a regional program to one that’s known nationwide.

Old-School Spartans

Most of the great days in the history of San Jose State basketball are decades in the past. During the 1920s, 30s, and 40s, the Spartans won eight conference tournament championships. At times, they were one of the best college basketball programs in California. The Spartans even made it into the top-25 during the 1949-50 season and reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 1951. However, it would be 1980 until the Spartans got back to the Big Dance, enduring a few decades of futility.

Back to the Big Time

In 2013, San Jose State was invited to join the Mountain West Conference, changing the fortunes of the basketball program. Naturally, playing in a better conference only made the journey far more difficult for the Spartans, who struggled immensely during their first few seasons in the league. But playing against better competition ultimately made San Jose State better. With the arrival of head coach Tim Miles in 2021, the Spartans finally showed signs of life. In Miles’ second season, the Spartans improved from 8-23 the previous year to 21-14, making a postseason run to the CBI Quarterfinals. It was a sign that San Jose State belongs in a conference like the Mountain West and that bigger and better things are on the horizon.
