About America First Field

Rio Tinto Stadium

Located in Sandy, Utah, a suburb of Salt Lake City, Rio Tinto Stadium is an outdoor soccer-specific stadium with a capacity of up to 20,213. Affectionately known as the Rio T or even just the RioT, this newly-constructed soccer arena is the home of major league soccer events, football, and rugby games, and several concerts.

The History of Rio Tinto Stadium

A relatively new stadium, Rio Tinto was originally conceived in 2005. Breaking ground in 2006 and opening its doors for the first time in 2008, the venue’s history is mostly a collection of stories about politicians arguing about where it would be built and how much it would cost. In fact, for a while it looked like the project would never get off the ground in the first place until the governor of Utah at the time stepped in and helped pave the way for its construction!

What’s So Special About Rio Tinto Stadium Events?

Real Salt Lake has, from the very beginning, been one of the biggest contenders in the MLS, and many of its biggest wins have been at Rio Tinto Stadium. You’re guaranteed one hell of a show if you catch this soccer team on the pitch at this venue for sure!
