About the Portland Timbers
Portland Timbers Tickets
The city of Portland, Oregon has a long history in the lumber industry. It also has a long history of soccer teams named the Timbers. Not a coincidence. The Portland Timbers of the MLS is the latest reincarnation of the Timbers name in homage to the region, playing their first season in 2011 and quickly making their mark on the league.
Deep Tree Roots
The first iteration of the Portland Timbers was born in 1975 as an expansion franchise in the North American Soccer League. The team folded in 1982 but returned in 1985 as part of the Western Soccer Alliance. A few years later, the WSA merged with the American Soccer League to form the American Professional Soccer League in 1990. Ultimately, the Timbers ended up in the United Soccer League from 2001 to 2010 – winning the Commissioner’s Cup championship in 2004 and 2009 – before being invited to join MLS for the 2011 season.
Portland made the MLS playoffs just once in their first four seasons. However, with the leadership of head coach Caleb Porter, the team came out of nowhere to win the MLS Cup in 2005. The Timbers made another run to the MLS Cup finals in 2018, only to fall short against Atlanta.
The Greatest Fan Base
It’s not an exaggeration to say that the Timbers have the most loyal fan base in the MLS. With Providence Park having a capacity of just over 21,000 fans, the Timbers have sold out every home game in their history – a streak that’s lasted well over 100 games. There are thousands of fans on the waiting list for season tickets, and the "fan club" known as the Timbers Army creates a wild and crazy atmosphere for every game. Fans also have a special affinity for Timber Joey, the team’s official mascot, who uses an actual chainsaw to cut a piece off a log every time the Timbers score a goal.
