Have you seen the made-for-Netflix movie “To the Boys I’ve Loved Before”? It’s a direct reference to the Albert Hammond Jr Song, “To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before”. And while the movie’s plot has absolutely nothing to do with the song or the artist, it’s always interesting to see pop culture reinventing things from pop–culture past.

Romantic comedy references aside, Albert Hammond Jr’s career would make an interesting movie in and of itself. Not only has he had a successful solo career, but he is a sometimes member of the mega-famous band, The Strokes. He’s also been in and out of rehab, which gives him good character development. The Strokes to Solo Success

Albert was born in Los Angeles, in the 1980s, into a family of performers. He was sent to Switzerland to go to boarding school at the age of 13. The goal was to give him more stability than life with his always-working and performing father could provide. It was in boarding school that he met Julian Casablancas, who was his ticket into playing guitar for The Strokes. He’s put out three or so albums with the Strokes, which is just as many as he’s put out on his own.

Francis Trouble and Momentary Masters

Our two favorite solo albums by Hammond Jr. are Francis Trouble, which came out in 2015, and Momentary Masters, which is a more recent offering. Both are quite conceptual, and between the first and the second albums, you can really hear how both his musical style and songwriting have matured.
