About Tigers vs. Twins

Twins vs Tigers Tickets

For roughly 100 years, the Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins have been in direct opposition to one another. Even though the Twins began their history as the Washington Senators, both teams were original members of the American League in 1991. When the Senators relocated to Minnesota and became the Twins in 1961, the two became regional rivals. Also, when MLB realigned the divisions in the 1990s, they put the Twins and Tigers together in the AL Central, and the two have been division rivals ever since.

Twins vs Tigers

Over the years, there have been more than a few times when the Twins and Tigers were fighting over one spot as the last two teams standing in their division. One of the most memorable was in the 1987 ALCS when the Twins took care of the Tigers in five games to reach the World Series, which they ultimately won.

The two also had a memorable battle in 2006, as the Tigers led the AL Central most of the season, only to have the Twins come from behind late in the year to win the division by a game. Just a few years later in 2009, Detroit and Minnesota finished the season with identical records, forcing a one-game playoff to decide the AL Central, a game the Twins won in 12 innings to advance to the postseason and send the Tigers home empty-handed.

Another thing the Twins and Tigers have in common is that both clubs have beautiful downtown stadiums. In 2000, the Tigers moved into Comerica Park, which continues to stand out among major league stadiums because of its carousel and Ferris wheel. A decade later, the Twins moved into Target Field in downtown Minneapolis, a stadium that does an amazing job of paying homage to the history of Twins baseball.
