About Shell Energy Stadium

BBVA Compass Stadium

BBVA Stadium, nestled in the heart of downtown Houston, is a multi-purpose outdoor stadium that features cutting-edge design and provides seating for more than 22,000 adoring sports fans. Once known as BBVA Compass Stadium, the site just recently changed its name as part of the deal with its main sponsor, which changed its name from BBVA Compass Bank to just BBVA USA in 2019.

The History of BBVA Stadium

The beginnings of what would become known as BBVA Stadium can be traced back to 2009 when the Houston Dynamo, the local Major League Soccer franchise for the city, expressed a desire to more or less go halfsies with the city on funding a new outdoor arena. A few years of back-and-forth ensued until a deal was hammered out, and in 2011 construction crews broke ground on what would soon become the city’s newest venue. Just one short year later, and BBVA Compass Stadium, as it was then called, opened its doors to the public.

What Makes BBVA Stadium Events So Special?

BBVA Stadium was designed from the ground-up to be the perfect big city soccer stadium. It’s been described as “tight, atmospheric, and intimate,” and, frankly, the description is dead-on. From its soaring geometrically-striking architectural facade to its fan experience that focuses on bringing fans together to celebrate wins and commiserate over losses, taking in a game at BBVA Stadium is always more than the sum of its parts!
