About the New Orleans Saints

New Orleans Saints Tickets

Thanks to the New Orleans Saints' current success, it's easy to forget that they once were one of the worst teams in football. With a spirit as resilient as that of New Orleans, though, the Saints persevered and have become a team to make their city proud.

The Worst of the Worst

The Saints played their first NFL season in 1967 and were nothing short of horrible for the first 20 years of their existence. They had 10 different coaches during those 20 years and failed to record a winning season, finishing 8-8 twice to avoid 20 consecutive losing seasons at the start of the franchise. Those years were as bad as it’s ever been for an NFL team.

It wasn’t until Jim Mora was hired as head coach in 1986 that things started to turn around. Mora led the Saints to their first-ever playoff appearance in 1987 and their first division title in 1991. However, New Orleans wouldn’t win a playoff game for the first time until the 2000 season under Jim Haslett.

Post-Katrina Years

It’s odd to think of a horrible natural disaster as the flashpoint for a sports franchise, but it’s true for the Saints. After Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in 2005, the Saints were unable to use the Superdome. Without a true home stadium, the team went 3-13 in what would become Haslett’s final season with the team.

Fortunately, the Superdome was repaired and in working condition for the team’s triumphant and emotional return at the start of the 2006 season. That was also the first season under new head coach Sean Payton and the first after signing quarterback Drew Brees. Together, Payton and Brees have transformed the franchise. Not including the year that Payton was suspended for the infamous bounty scandal, the Payton-Brees tandem has taken the Saints to the playoffs seven times in 12 seasons. Most importantly, together they won Super Bowl XLIV in 2009, giving the Saints a long-awaited championship.
