About Viejas Arena
Viejas Arena
The Viejas Arena at Aztec Bowl, more well known as simply Viejas Arena, is a mixed-use indoor sports stadium, and event venue located in San Diego, California on the campus of San Diego State University. Capable of accommodating more than 12,800 screaming fans, the Viejas Arena has been providing a home for college sports and top-tier concerts for more than 20 years.
The History of Viejas Arena
Designed to provide more space for the college’s sports teams than their current accommodations, Viejas Arena broke ground in 1995 and saw its doors open for the first time in 1997. It was built on the site of the old Aztec Bowl football stadium, which had been built in 1936 and had been partially demolished to make way for Viejas Arena. A set of concrete bleachers survived and were incorporated into the new construction as a way of honoring the old building, which had stood the test of time as well as it could before making way for the new.
