This family-owned company has been making shoes for decades. They make relatively expensive shoes that will last the wearer ten years, at least. They’ve always been good sellers, and the company never struggled to move their product, until they did.

Set in the last 20 years, this musical touches on how retail is suffering in the face of saturated markets and online ordering. But don’t worry – it’s not a musical all about supply and demand. There is some violence, drag queens, and romance, too. It all starts with Charlie, who’s looking for ways to make his family business relevant again. What happens next is mostly a true story – so pay attention!

Lola and Charlie

Lola is a drag queen, a male performer in woman’s clothes, who was raised as a professional boxer. He and very square business owner Charlie meet by chance, and it seems they have nothing in common. That is until Charlie is made aware of a gap in the market – heels for men, or heavy women with big feet. He and Lola team up to make this part of their new business plan, though not all of the employees are willing to play along. It takes them more than a little while to warm up to the idea of making “Kinky Boots” and even longer to warm up to Lola herself.

This play was based on a movie, which was based on a true story about a man named Charlie Pierce. The movie wasn’t a musical, but Cyndi Lauper (yes, that Cyndi Lauper) took it upon herself to add music -and sparkles- to the score.
